There’s a lot more to PSP than playing games, by default it can already play mp3, movies, browse the web with wifi and listen to Internet Radio. So what else is there that we can do with it? Let’s list it up shall we.
PS: before we start, please be reminded that I assume your PSP is homebrew enabled. If not, then find a way to make it happen
a couple of hints here and here.
PSP as an emulator
There are a lot of interesting games on the GBA (Zelda Minish Cap, Mario Kart), SNES (Chrono Trigger) or maybe if you’re feeling retro you can even play NES or Gameboy. Here’s how you can do it:
PSP as an eBook and Comic Reader
View game manuals that you download from gamefaqs or reading eBooks on the road (or the toilet), you can do so with Bookr. It can open pdf and txt files, have a zoom capabillity, word wrapping (for txt format only) and my favorite is: rotate view so you can read on a vertical psp
Transfer data from PSP to PSP via WiFi
Have a homebrew game that you want to play multiplayer but your friends’ PSP doesn’t have it? Transfer it PSP to PSP with no computer! do this with the program Adhoc File Transfer.
Transfer data from PSP to PC via WiFi
Tired of cables? Install PSP-FTPD so you can access your PSP from your computer with a wifi connection using FTP programs. Please be reminded that this is not an Adhoc connection, the PSP needs to connect to the same wifi network that the computer is in.
Customizing your background and themes
Yes you can change the background and color, but what if you want something fancy like my theme on the above picture? Here’s how to install a custom theme (XMB). You can download many themes on PSP-Themes.net or MyXMB.
Ok that’s 5, but here’s some of the things that is worth mentioning:
- Running Java Mobile Phone Application on PSP using PSPKVM
- Running PS1 games like Final Fantasy VII and Xenogears.. ok maybe i’ll let this one slide and ask you guys to just google it
There are many more apps that you maybe interested, you can look it up at PSP-Hacks download section. Owh and one more note, when you download and unzip an application and it came out with 2 files by this format: APP_NAME and APP_NAME%. Like for example PSPFTPD and PSPFTPD%. Then it’s not something that you can use on a PSP Slim (which means it’s PSP Phat with 1.5.0 Kernel only). A PSP Slim homebrew application is a folder with EBOOT.PBP file in the folder.
Ok then, good luck and have fun with your PSP!
Have a Nintendo DS? Then you might want to read 5 things you need to know about Nintendo DS
